This submission opportunity has now closed and an answer by the Transport Group of the NTCF has been given (NTCF Transport group on GPS Submission – April 2024).
The Minister of Transport has released the draft Government Policy Statement on land transport (GPS) 2024 for feedback. This draft GPS replaces the previous GPS that the former Government consulted on in August 2023.
The document “focuses on achieving four key strategic priorities:
- Economic Growth and Productivity
- Increased Maintenance and Resilience
- Safety
- Value for Money”.
In a Government document that sets the overarching direction for land transport in Aotearoa through to 2034, addressing transport effects on climate change as a strategic priority is conspicuous by its absence.
The proposed Hope Bypass is listed as a Road of National Significance (p. 11), but is not specifically listed as currently identified for Crown funding (unless it’s within ‘regional resilience’) (pp. 39-40).
